'The Spring' at Chilmark, Sun 27 Aug, 5pm. Adult Ticket

27.50

'The Spring' is an opera created in 1761 by James Harris who lived in Salisbury Cathedral Close, was a friend of Handel, very active in the city's musical life, MP for Christchurch and a grammarian.  Pasticcio operas - created from the music of several composers - were popular at that time, and Harris took the music from many composers, including Handel and Pergolesi, setting new words and creating a pastoral opera The Spring. This was performed in Salisbury, then at Drury Lane Theatre in London with the support of David Garrick. After a few further performances around the country it disappeared from view.

Nigel Wyatt discovered that there is a copy of the score in Cambridge University Library, and from this he has re-created the opera, which has some most attractive music. We are very much looking forward to bringing The Spring back to life, and as usual our chorus, dancers and orchestra will be joined by young professional soloists.
